Sprained ankle, ankle ligament injury
There are strong ligaments between the outer ankle and the leg, which tighten in supination. As the forces exerted during supination mainly affect the leg when under stress, ankle injuries typically affect the outer ankle. When injuries of this nature occur, the outer ankle often breaks, but an isolated torn ligament is also common. Injured ligaments are often not spotted and not treated properly leading to articular instability later.
- Treatment
A fresh injury requires emergency treatment, meaning surgery and/or 6 weeks in plaster. Cases of articular instability are frequently encountered. The use of footwear supporting the ankle or perhaps a special aid may be justified.
In case of ankle ligament injury or lateral instability of the ankle, the outer side of the outer ankle can be opened and the foot turned.
